One Simple Reason Why We Cannot Fill Another Provider’s Propane Tank

Thinking about switching propane providers?

If your current propane provider keeps dropping the ball, you might be thinking about making a change.

  • Have they run out of fuel and left you in the cold?

  • Is their delivery system hard to navigate?

  • Do you wish they had a fuel tracking system that allowed you to plan ahead and order a tank refill before you get too low?

When you heat your home, cottage or business with propane, you need a provider you can count on. But did you know that in Ontario, a propane company cannot fill another company’s tank? Find out why they cannot fill another provider’s propane tank and how to factor that into your decision to switch from your old provider to a new one.

British Empire Fuels is a top-rated propane provider in Kawartha Lakes. But we can’t fill another provider’s tank.

If you live in Kawartha Lakes, making the switch to British Empire Fuels makes a lot of sense. Our established fuel tracking and delivery services mean you can stay on top of fuel consumption and request a refill before you run low. And, with the largest propane storage facility in the region, propane supply interruptions are extremely unlikely, which means you can rest easy knowing you will never run out of fuel.

From tank delivery to setup, we make switching propane providers simple and seamless from start to finish. All you have to do is call 705-738-2121 and tell us you are ready to make the switch.

But even with a huge propane reserve, a fine-honed delivery system, and an easy-to-use client portal for tracking fuel, there is one thing we cannot do:

We cannot fill another provider’s propane tank. It’s the law.

Why does the law prohibit propane providers from filling other companies’ tanks?

It comes down to ownership and safety.

Most residential and commercial propane tanks are owned by the propane provider, not the home or business owner. Because the tank is the property of the supplier, other companies are contractually restricted from filling equipment they don’t own.

Why?

Simple. Because the company that owns the tank is responsible for maintaining, inspecting, and ensuring the safe operation of the tanks they service. According to the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) guidelines, filling or maintaining equipment owned by another provider creates liability, tracking, and regulatory compliance issues regarding safety checks.

When it comes to propane, safety has to come first.

Before we can step in as your new propane provider, we have to remove your existing tank and install one of our own.

Part of the process of switching propane providers is switching propane tanks. While our propane specialists make the transition to British Empire Fuels seamless and worry-free, it isn’t instant—and that needs to be factored into your plans. As soon as you cancel your contract with your existing propane provider and they remove their tank, we can spring into action!
